WordCloud+ vs the MonkeyLearn word cloud generator

MonkeyLearn's free word cloud generator went offline in 2024, when monkeylearn.com was folded into Medallia's website; the old address now returns a 404. This page records what the tool did, from archived copies of its own pages, and shows where each of those jobs lives in WordCloud+, which finds and ranks phrases, cleans text with stop words and replacements, and codes responses into themes.

What happened to the MonkeyLearn word cloud

If you had clouds or CSV exports from the tool, they are files on your computer and still open. Nothing was stored in an account, because the tool had none.

What MonkeyLearn offered

Choose WordCloud+ if...

  • You want a tool that is live and maintained. The free preview at /create needs no sign-up, and the full editor is a free account away.
  • You want phrases found and ranked, not just single words with a relevance number. WordCloud+ extracts phrases of up to four words and scores them with a method you can choose, including plain frequency.
  • You want control over what stays together. A find-and-replace pair turns "net promoter score" into one term, and the stop-word list is editable per project rather than fixed.
  • You want to check a big word before you trust it. Every term links to the passages it came from (References), and the Score Transfers view shows how each score was built.
  • You want to code responses into themes with Premium, and export the cloud as PNG, JPG or SVG on any plan, including Free.

What WordCloud+ does differently

Phrases, not just single words

Phrases of up to four words are extracted and scored, so "delivery was late" can appear as one term instead of three unrelated words. You can choose the scoring method, including plain frequency.

How WordCloud+ finds phrases

Every term links back to its passages

Select any term to see every passage it came from, with the term in bold, and open Score Transfers to see how its score was built. A big word in the cloud can be checked against what people actually wrote rather than taken on trust.

Coding for open-ended responses (Premium)

Create codes with a label, description and colour, then tag phrases with them. Coded phrases are highlighted in your text and coloured in the cloud, which helps when you are grouping free-text answers into themes.

Cleaning that stays with the project

Stop words (with defaults for 36 Latin-alphabet languages) and find-and-replace pairs are saved with each project, so merged spellings and removed filler words apply every time the cloud is rebuilt.

The default Combination Counting score. Switch the algorithm in Settings to Frequency if you only want counts.
